FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES
Shut Out: Low Income Mothers and Higher Education in Post-Welfare America, edited by Valerie Polakow, Sandra S. Butler, Luisa Stormer Deprez, and Peggy Kahn, is scheduled for a May 1 publication date by the State University of New York Press.
Lidia Lee recently co-presented "Auditory Perception of Nonlinear Distortion" to the Society of Automotive Engineers 2004 World Congress, held in Detroit.
"Hearing and Psychoacoustics," by Lidia Lee, is a chapter in Premium Home Theater: Design and Construction.
John Palladino presented "Are Teachers' Dispositions Closing the Door to Sudanese Refugees?" to the 31st annual National Conference and Celebration on the Black Family in America, held in Louisvile, KY.
Ron Williamson has been selected by the Principals' Partnership Project of the Union Pacific Foundation to conduct an external evaluation of the impact of the partnership on the work of principals who are participating in the project. About 150 schools are involved in the project, of which seven will be case studies for the first phase of the evaluation.
"Abolishing the Public School System is Not the Answer," by Jerry Robbins, appeared in the Spring issue of the ACEI "Focus on Teacher Education." The article ran with an introduction by Judy Williston and Sue Grossman.
Carolyn Nelson, who until recently was a graduate assistant in the dean's office, is the author of the 30-page booklet "'The Normal Company' in the War of the Rebellion: 17th Michigan Infantry, Company E." An extended review of the booklet, along with a photo from the booklet and Nelson's photo, appeared in a recent issue of the Ann Arbor News.
Jeff Schulz has been named to the Coordinating Committee for the Health Improvement Plan by the Washtenaw County Public Health Department.
Provost Paul Schollaert has announced that the following COE faculty members have been recommended to President Kirkpatrick and the EMU Board of Regents for indeterminate tenure, effective September 1, 2004: Jeff Armstrong, Geff Colón, Ellen Hoffman, Sherry Jerome, Jodi Johnson, Toni Stokes Jones, Shel Levine, Kathlyn Parker, and John Tonkovich.
Kay Woodiel will be honored at the Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony on March 29.
Alane Starko and Jackie Tracy have been named to the Bargaining Council.
Suzanne Zelnik-Geldys' swing dance classes were touted in a recent issue of the Eastern Echo.Leah Adams (emeritus) recently returned from Hong Kong, where she participated in the Sixth International Conference of OMEP-Hong Kong. Adams gave a keynote address and was on a panel with early childhood leaders from Nigeria, Australia, China, Switzerland, and Columbia. While in Hong Kong, she also participated in the Executive Board meetings of the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP). Adams is the Vice President for North America and the Caribbean.
Sophie French (emeritus) has sent word that she has developed macular degeneration to the point that it has affected her ability to read. French served in the Department of Special Education from 1948-1976. She lives in Ann Arbor.

STUDENT NOTES
Joe Delegato, a 50-year old SEM-T student preparing to become a special education teacher, was the author of extended material praising Bob Seger's music and the effect on his life. This material appeared in the Detroit Free Press.
On March 29, 148 student-athletes with outstanding grade point averages will be recognized at the Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony. Of those, 49 (33%) are from the College of Education. They are:

COE CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE
The annual COE Celebration of Excellence ceremony to honor academic achievements of students will be held on March 25, 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the McKenny Union Ballroom. Kenneth Burnley, CEO of the Detroit Schools, will be the speaker. Entertainment will be by the EMU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Donald Babcock. Jerry Robbins will serve as master of ceremonies.
Among the students to be honored will be those in the COE with high grade point averages, COE students in the Honors Program, scholarship recipients, those nominated for the Student Teacher of the Year competition, various program area "students of the year," masters and specialist program scholars, doctoral graduates, Kappa Delta Pi officers and initiates, and Phi Delta Kappa officers.
Carl Isaacs is chair of the planning committee, assisted by Sylvia Bethea, Ronald Callison, Tiffany Cogdell, Winifred Martin, Joan Quinlan, Susan Rink, Heather Shelton, and Cliff Elston. Light refreshments will be served prior to and during the ceremony. Honorees and their guests are cordially invited.
ALUMNI NOTES
Jeffrey Bradley '90 is one of two Michigan teachers honored with the 2004 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award carries with it a $10,000 prize.
GEOGRAPHY APPROVAL RECEIVED
The College of Education has been notified by the Michigan Department of Education of approval of our program to prepare secondary teachers of geography (CB) at the major and minor level. The approval extends until 2011.

The Michigan Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Spring Conference will be held at the Kellogg Center, Michigan State University, on April 2, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p. m. The topic is "Poverty and Achievement." The keynote speaker is Kati Haycock, director of The Education Trust of Washington, D.C. Other speakers include Nelson Maylone and Valerie Polakow.
