FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES
Joe Bishop was featured in a full-page article in the Spring issue of the Education@Iowa magazine.
Nelson Maylone was quoted recently in a story in the Detroit News about parental involvement.
The annual Michigan Future Problem Solving Program competition was held recently on the EMU campus. Don Staub coordinated many of the logistics for the event.
Pat Williams-Boyd is the subject of a major article in the recent issue of the "Directions" newsletter of the EMU Continuing Education unit. The COE's "Best Practices Conference" is the subject of another story. A third story, filling a full page, is about the involvement of COE faculty/staff/graduate students in training teachers to function fully in Milan's new high tech high school. An announcement was made that one of the two Dahl scholarships was awarded to Heather Heffernan of Inkster, a student in the Urban Teacher Certification program.
The April 6 issue of "Focus EMU" includes reference to awards made to Joe Coyner, Karen Carney, and Beth Johnson ("Beyond the Call of Duty") at recent ceremonies of the Holman Learning Center and John Palladino's receipt of a spring/sum-mer research award to study "How School Administrators Collaborate with Homeless Mothers on Behalf of Youth with Emotional Disabilities."
A special section of Focus EMU, sponsored by the EMU Foundation, includes a "We Give to EMU Because" feature of Karen and Michael Paciorek; an announcement of Faculty/Staff drive gifts of almost $14,000 to the Department of Leadership and Counseling and of more than $13,400 to the COE Excellence fund; a solicitation for the Marylyn Lake Memorial Endowed Scholarship; an announcement of the Delores and William Brehm Endowed Scholarship in Special Education ($200,000, the largest individual gift so far this fiscal year); a grant of $231,000 from the Skillman Foundation to the COE; and a gift of $12,000 to launch a partnership between the prison-based Michigan Braille Transcribing Fund and the COE.
ALUMNI NOTES
Barbara Weiss '50, '69 will be recognized on May 8 at the 43rd Alumni Awards Dinner as a recipient of the John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award. She taught in the Wayne school district until transferring to Ypsilanti in 1964 as a string orchestra teacher. She organized several school music groups in the area. After retirement in 1985, she has continued as a performer. In 1992 she received the local Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award.
Joe Palka '87 has been named as an EMU assistant football coach. He has also coached at St. Joseph's College and at Adrian College.
Elizabeth Daniels is a teacher at Twin Beach Elementary School in Walled Lake. She was named "Teacher of the Year" for her building and recently was named to the same award for the Walled Lake district.
STUDENT NOTES
Therapeutic recreation students earned a full-page story in the "Community Life" section of the April 3 Ann Arbor News. "Project Magic" has been taken to several area intergenerational settings, including Mott Children's Hospital and the Ypsilanti Senior Center. Students Tricia Wozniak, Masataka Nose, Lindsay Cameron, Candice Stratten, as well as faculty member David Thomas, were quoted in the article.
Prospective science teacher Lisa Radtke was recently quoted in a newspaper article in connection with her work with Christian Challenge. Radtke spent two months in central Asia teaching English.
The Eastern Echo carried an account of the recent successful bake sale conducted by the Dance Forum. Funds are used for costumes and to send students to the American College Dance Festival.

WEB SITE USE GROWS RAPIDLY
The number of "hits" on the main page of the COE web site increased from 8,303 during March 2003 to 11,885 during March 2004. Growth over the year for other months has been comparable. Although 98% of the hits originate from a U.S. computer user, the total for a recent month shows hits from users in 35 other countries, led by Canada (42), Japan (22), and South Korea (19).
