FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Joe Bishop started something!  He was instrumental in bringing seven Ukranian educators to EMU and public schools in this area earlier this year.  Host teachers were eligible to apply to visit schools in the Ukraine.  Ypsilanti West Middle School teacher Juanda Gikandi was accepted, one of two from Michigan.  A full account of this exchange experience, including Bishop's involvement, was in a recent issue of the Ann Arbor News.

Diane Haslam is pictured and quoted in an article on fitness that appeared in the Singapore News Today magazine.

Shawn Quilter (with Roberta K. Weber, Florida Atlantic University) published "Quality Assurance for Online Teaching in Higher Education: Considering and Identifying Best Practice for E-Learning" in the April-June issue of the International Journal on E-Learning.

At the Council on Exceptional Children convention in New Orleans, Nancy Halmhuber and Gary Navarre presented a poster session on "Academic Service-Learning: A Training Tool for Special Educators."

Jerry Robbins was recently reappointed to the Michigan Department of Education Committee of Scholars to review the application of the University of Phoenix to offer initial teacher preparation for prospective elementary teachers.

Jerry Robbins was quoted in a recent Ann Arbor News story on the 25th anniversary of the Ypsilanti Community Band, which he directs.  Robbins conducted the final concert of the 25th season last Tuesday at Washtenaw Community College, assisted by several former directors.  Jon Margerum-Leys is the assistant director of the ensemble.

Ethan Lowenstein's CURR 304 class activities received a lengthy treatment in a recent Ann Arbor News story.  A fifth-grade class from Marcus Garvey Academy in Detroit came to campus recently to study the Civil Rights movement.  Lowenstein was quoted at length in the article, along with COE students Reda Borden, Kandice Banner, Sarah Trumbo, Eileen Bigham, and Rick Bush.

Karen Hansen was recently reelected as the vice president for UAW 1975 (clerical union at EMU).  Norma Taylor-Bishop will be the steward for the clerical union in the Porter Building for the next three years.

Jack Minzey (emeritus) is one of 20 persons invited to an all-expense-paid conference later this month at the Mayan Dude Ranch near San Antonio, Texas.  The conference, sponsored by the National Community Education Association and the National Center for Community Education, is a "think-tank" gathering entitled "Back to the Future." Its purpose is to share ideas on the future of education in the United States.

Leah Adams (emeritus) gave three presentations at the recent Association for Childhood Education International convention in New Orleans.  With Susan Miller (Kutztown University), she presented "Visiting Programs at Home and Abroad.  With Anna Kirova (University of Alberta), she presented "The Joys and Challenges of Working with Newly Immigrated Families."  With Jim Hoot ( SUNY-Buffalo) and Tunde Szecsi (Florida Gulf Coast University), she presented "What Teachers of Young Children Should Know About Islam."

Q.S. Samonte (emeritus) gave a reading of  traditional poetry in a Filipino dialect at the Book Festival in Ann Arbor.  The poetry reading in different Asian languages was sponsored by the UM Center for Development of Language and Literacy.

COE AT COMMENCEMENT

At the Winter Commencement, five Sp.A. degrees were awarded, three in educational leadership and two in special education.  In addition, 92 master's degrees were awarded, including 17 in speech-language pathology, 15 in educational leadership, and 11 in school counseling.

SPONSORED PROJECTS

Ellen Hoffman, with Marcia Mardis as co-director, has received $5,000 from Kent State University for "Infusing Science into Middle School Media Centers: Obstacles and Strategies."  This project is designed to examine systematic issues that directly impact middle school science teaching and learning.  A particular focus is ensuring that school media center resources and services can be fully extending to positively impact the community.  The project will identify obstacles to school media center use by science educators.  It will also begin to describe successful strategies to make effective collaborative use of this resource.

Lidia Lee has received $2,000 from GedLee LLC of Northville for "Audio Sound Quality Study."  This project is for data collection via a subjective test of audio sound quality using a computer program for stimuli presentation and data logging.
