 COE BREAKS CREDIT HOUR RECORD

Including unofficial numbers from Spring 2004, the College of Education has generated 102,328 student semester credit hours for the FY04 fiscal year, an all-time high.  Previous highs include those from last year and from FY91. 

The 102,328 credit hours represents a 6.57% increase over the previous year.  This is the first year that the COE has ever generated more than 100,000 credit hours in a year.  The Department of Leadership and Counseling has increased its credit hours in a year's time by 22.75%.  For Student Teaching, the one-year increase was 7.54%.  For Teacher Education, it was 7.45%; for Special Education, 4.26%; and for HPERD, 1.58%.

 FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

"Reading for Pleasure: It's OK!," by Helen Ditzhazy and Nelson Maylone appeared in the current issue of the Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin.

 EARTH-SPACE SCIENCE APPROVED

The Michigan Department of Education has re-approved EMU's program for preparing teachers in Earth-Space Science.  Reviewers described this as a "solid, well-balanced program."

 ALUMNI NOTES

Harold Simons '68, '70 a Huron High School (Ann Arbor) physical education teacher and coach, was pictured and quoted in a recent article in the Ann Arbor News.  Simons attended the Jones School in Ann Arbor, at the time for Black children.

Nanette Mueller, a third grade teacher at University Hills Elementary School in Rochester Hills, is retiring this year after a 30-year career, most of it in the same building.  She now plans to live on a sailboat.

Robin Evans '79, art teacher at Ypsilanti High School, and her students have been featured recently in several newspaper articles as they have prepared and placed large art objects in downtown Ypsilanti.

Jean Britton-Durst '80, interim principal of Saline High School, has been named to that position on a permanent basis.

Three of the six finalists for the Dearborn Heights superintendency are EMU alums: Ricardo Medina '82, '86; Joseph Pius '84; and George Przygodski '83.  Medina is currently superintendent of Bridgeport-Spaulding schools, Pius is the South Lake personnel director, and Przygodski is the executive director of human resources for Dexter schools.

James Armitage '75, age 57, longtime head basketball coach at Henry Ford Community College, died recently of cancer in West Palm Beach, FL.  Prior to going to HFCC, he coached basketball at EMU.  Among his many recognitions was "Michigan community college coach of the year."

 STUDENT NOTES

Melanie S. Ferren will defend her dissertation, "The Impact of Program Review on Successful Entrepreneurial Units in Higher Education," on May 28 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 203 of the Porter Building.  Martha Tack is the chair.  The public is invited.

The local chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma and the health education faculty are sponsoring a 5K walk-run on June 5 at 9:00 a.m. to benefit the Brain Tumor Association.  Additional information is available from Christine Karshin.

 COE COUNCIL

The College of Education Council met on May 19 with Martha Kinney-Sedgwick, chair, presiding.  The first hour was spent in a two-way video conversation with representatives of Western Michigan University concerning the governance of professional education programs.  No action was taken concerning proposed changes in the EMU structure.

During the business meeting, the COE Council endorsed a variety of changes in the BBE in Computer Information Systems.  The next meeting will be in July.

 SHORT NOTES

Nominations for various awards made by the Association of Teacher Education are due at times over the next few months, with the first being on June 1.  See the "Opportunities and Events" calendar for additional information.

June 19 is the deadline for registering for the "COATT Camp" to be held July 19-21 at Hope College.  An official EMU representative/participant will be subsidized.  For information, www.coatt.org/camp

"Institutional Values" award nominations are due by June 30.  See www.emich.edu/iva/ .

The COE Fall Conference will be held on August 31, in the usual format with a large-group session in the morning, lunch, and department meetings in the afternoon.  All sessions will be held in the Porter Building, as appropriate space is not available at Eagle Crest.

On September 14, there will be a career retirement reception honoring Jerry Robbins, 4:00-6:00 p.m., Eagle Crest Clubhouse.  All COE faculty and staff members are invited.
