 FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Lizbeth Stevens attended the national Council on Exceptional Children convention in New Orleans.  While there, she participated in sessions of the IDEA National Resource Cadre Spring Institute.

Jerry Robbins participated in a meeting in Lansing of the Committee of Scholars that is reviewing a proposal from the University of Phoenix to offer initial teacher certification at the post-baccalaureate level for prospective K-5 teachers.  Robbins was elected chair of the group, whose work is likely to continue over the next several months.

Lizbeth Stevens was in Albuquerque, NM earlier this month attending a meeting of the Council of State Association Presidents of speech and hearing organizations.  Stevens is president-elect of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association.  She has also participated in meetings in Lansing related to a licensure bill for speech-language pathologists.

Jerry Robbins will conduct today's concert of the Ypsilanti Community Band at the Yankee Air Force Museum in Willow Run as part of the Memorial Day ceremonies.

Provost Paul Schollaert has announced his recommendation  that  the  following COE faculty members be promoted to the rank of associate professor: Jeff Armstrong, Ellen Hoffman, Sherry Jerome, Toni Stokes Jones, and Shel Levine.

Don Halquist, in addition to his duties in the Department of Teacher Education, has taught master classes in the dance program in HPERD.  He is a former dancer with the Bill Evans Dance Company.

Internationally renowned modern dancer and educator Bill Evans auditioned EMU students last month.  Evans will serve as a guest artist in the dance program next year and, as such, will be setting his work Craps on EMU students.

 STUDENT NOTES

Lorri MacDonald will defend her dissertation "Education in the Media: Its Impact on Teacher Self-Efficacy and Retention" on June 9 at 10:00 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C.  David Anderson is the chair.  The public is invited.

 Kenneth Cleeton Scholarship: Abigail Craft.

Helen and Tarik Daoud Scholarship: Jennifer Januzzi, Jessica Pappas, Jamie Woodring, and Rene Zalewski.

Elementary Education (McCrickett) Scholarship: Rachel Fauman.

Wilma Elliott Scholarship: Sarah Haynes.

Eudora Estabrook Scholarship: Angela Lyons.

 NEW SCHOLARSHIP

The adult children of Nora Martin-Lee Martin, Jr., Kristi Martin Rodriguez, and Dia Martin- have initiated an endowed scholarship, in honor of their mother, to be presented to students aspiring to become special educators.

Nora White Martin's passion and respect for children and adults with special learning and living challenges began during her high school years.  This led to her receiving a B.S. and M.A. in special education from EMU.  She received her Ph.D. in 1973 and has served many years as an EMU faculty member in the Department of Special Education.  She was inducted into the EMU Education Alumni Hall of Fame this spring.

 SHORT NOTES

Nominations for various awards made by the Association of Teacher Education are due at times over the next few months, with the first being on June 1.  See the "Opportunities and Events" calendar for additional information.

June 19 is the deadline for registering for the "COATT Camp" to be held July 19-21 at Hope College.  An official EMU representative/participant will be subsidized.  For information, www.coatt.org/camp

"Institutional Values" award nominations are due by June 30.  See www.emich.edu/iva/ .

The COE Fall Conference will be held on August 31, beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the usual format with a large-group session in the morning, lunch, and department meetings in the afternoon.  All sessions will be held in the Porter Building.

On September 14, there will be a career retirement reception honoring Jerry Robbins, 4:00-6:00 p.m., Eagle Crest Clubhouse.  All COE faculty and staff members are invited.
