FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

The June 2 issue of Eastern Echo carried a lengthy announcement, with photo, of Alane Starko's forthcoming appointment as interim dean.

Jerry Robbins spoke to the local chapter of Gray Panthers this past Saturday on the subject of "Federal Legislation to Ensure 'Highly Qualified Teachers' is Having the Opposite Effect."

ALUMNI NOTES

Blanche Mullen '31, age 94, a longtime teacher of music and art in the K-12 schools, created a scholarship administered through the Department of Music for prospective teachers of vocal music.  Mullen's roommate at "The Normal," Edna Roush '33, recently celebrated her 97th birthday with a party in Holland.

Lynne Raglin '77, '83, an elementary teacher in Ypsilanti, and her husband Dan created a scholarship in jazz studies administered through the Department of Music. 

Judith DeWoskin, English teacher at Community High School in Ann Arbor, is featured in a lengthy biographical sketch in the June issue of the Ann Arbor Observer.  DeWoskin received the Creative Writing Teacher of the Year award in 1997.

Jonathan Marceau '04, recipient of the state Outstanding Student/Intern Teacher of the Year, is featured in an extended article in the June 2 issue of the Eastern Echo.

Alan Dobrovolec '72, '74 died recently.  He grew up in Ohio and received his bachelor's degree from Hiram College.  He taught one year in Warren (Ohio) and one year in Detroit before joining the Taylor schools as teacher and coach.  Dobrovolec spent the rest of his career in Taylor, as teacher, assistant principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent.  His two graduate degrees are from EMU.  He retired in 2002.

STUDENT NOTES

Christopher Curtis will defend his dissertation "Creating School Communities that Foster Achievement in At-Risk Students" on June 8 at 1:00 p.m. in Porter 301 B/C.  Lorri MacDonald will defend her dissertation "Education in the Media: Its Impact on Teacher Self-Efficacy and Retention" on June 9 at 10:00 a.m. in Porter 301 B/C.  David Anderson is the chair of both.  The public is invited.

Jill de Meijer is a candidate for the Chelsea school board.

AWARD MADE

Joe Bishop has received $25,100 from the American Councils for International Education for "ACIE Citizenship Education Internship Program for Secondary School Educators and Teacher Trainers from Eurasia, Year 2."  This is the second year of a program hosting a five-week citizenship education internship program for K-12 school teachers, administrators, and teacher trainers from select countries of the former Soviet Union.  Seven educators from one of the countries will engage in studies at EMU and will work with a teacher-mentor in a K-12 district.

SHORT NOTES

The May 25 issue of the "Presidents' Perspectives" newsletter of the Presidents' Council of the State Universities of Michigan, written by CMU president Michael Rao, is devoted to teacher preparation and contains four specific references to EMU programming.

"Institutional Values" award nominations are due by June 30.  See www.emich.edu/iva/ .

The COE Fall Conference will be held on August 31, beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the usual format with a large-group session in the morning, lunch, and department meetings in the afternoon.  All sessions will be held in the Porter Building.

On September 14, there will be a career retirement reception honoring Jerry Robbins, 4:00-6:00 p.m., Eagle Crest Clubhouse.  All COE faculty and staff members are invited.

SPONSORED PROJECTS

Through the end of May, COE faculty and staff had received $1,980,298 through 15 sponsored project awards.  As a result, FY04 is likely to be the COE's second-highest year ever in this respect.  During the year to date, 22 proposals have been submitted requesting $16,693,331.

WEB SITE USE GROWS AND GROWS

The "hits" on the main page of the COE web site grew by 17% from May 2003 to May 2004. More than 10,000 hits per month are now not uncommon.  On average, over 12 months, there has been one hit every five minutes, around the clock, around the calendar.  While 98% of the hits came from the USA,  users in 32 other countries viewed the site last month.
