IN MEMORIAM

Professor Emeritus Jim Palasek died June 14. He served in the Department of Special Education from 1966 until his retirement in 1998. All three of his degrees were in speech pathology, from WMU in 1557, Purdue in 1960, and Syracuse in 1970. Prior to joining the EMU faculty, he was a speech/language pathologist for Oceana schools in Hart (MI) and for Glenbrook HIgh School in Northbrook (IL). He was a member of the Council for Exceptional Children and the Michigan Speech and Hearing Association.

Services were held last Friday at Holy Trinity Chapel with burial in Saugatuck today. Memorial gifts may be made to the EMU Foundation, Department of Special Education or to St. Joseph Mercy Hospice.

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTES

Shawn Quilter will be at Harvard this week and next week, having been selected for the Harvard Management Development Seminar.

Barbara Gorenflo participated in a Teacher Quality Conference in Nashville, TN this past week.

EMU faculty and staff members are leading professional development training for Detroit teachers in the use of laptops with sixth or seventh grade students.  Those participating include Ellen Hoffman,  Jon Margerum-Leys, Nancy Copeland, and Toni Jones, along with Pat Morgenstern and Catherine Hoffman of the COATT office.  The workshops are for three weeks and started June 12.

Elizabeth Broughton and Linda Lewis-White will receive COE Faculty Advising Awards during the COE Fall Conference.

An extended announcement of Alane Starko's appointment as interim dean appeared in the June 2 issue of the Echo.

Professor Emeritus Marvin Pasch is now living in a retirement community in Lincoln, CA, close to his grandchildren.

With our extended family: Samuel Kirkpatrick (EMU president) has resigned from the presidency effective July 31, 2004.

Russell Olwell (History and Philosophy) published "Schools and Universities: A New Social Contract" in the June 16 issue of Education Week. 

ALUMNI NOTES

Marv Dick ('70, '74) is the new superintendent for Ida Public Schools.

Joseph Pius '84 has been named superintendent of the Crestwood District (Dearborn Heights).  Pius is currently the personnel director for South Lake Schools (St. Claire Shores). 

Heidi Capraro '89, the 2004-2005 state Teacher of the Year, was featured in an article in the June 15 issue of the Echo.

 Marcia Ann Petrulio '78, who taught English  in the Sand Creek Public Schools for more than 20 years, died recently. 

 STUDENT NOTES

For Winter 2004, 1,023 College of Education students were named to the Deans List.  This included 124 from HPERD, 191 from Special Education, and 708 from Teacher Education.  Each winter and spring, Eastern Michigan University releases its semiannual Dean's List. Recipients of the honor must carry a minimum of 10 credit hours and maintain a 3.5 grade point average (out of a possible 4.0).

SHORT NOTES

In order for gifts to the EMU Foundation to be  credited to the current fiscal year, they must be received by the Foundation by noon today.  If you need information, contact Susan Rink.

New faculty orientation will be held on August 24-25 in Boone Hall.

The COE Fall Conference will be held on August 31, beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the usual format with a large-group session in the morning, lunch, and department meetings in the afternoon.  All sessions will be held in the Porter Building.

On September 14, there will be a career retirement reception honoring Jerry Robbins, 4:00-6:00 p.m., Eagle Crest Clubhouse.  All COE faculty and staff members are invited.
