NOTES FROM THE DEAN'S DESK

This edition of Monday Report represents a new beginning. For 609 weeks, from September 1991 until June 2004, Jerry Robbins prepared a weekly bulletin of news and accomplishments in Eastern Michigan University's College of Education.  It is a report that is on one hand uniquely Jerry's and on the other, part of all of us in the College.

On July 1, 2004 I began my service as interim dean of the College of Education. One of my first decisions was "What do I do with the Monday Report?"  As you can see, the Report lives on, although I anticipate its format and schedule will evolve over the next few months. After today's edition (which, with luck, will emerge somewhere in the vicinity of Monday July 12), there will not be another edition until mid-August, when I anticipate beginning an alternate-week schedule and perhaps slightly altered format. I look forward to your comments and suggestions on ways to serve and inform the College and community at large.

Beginning this new role as interim dean is both an exciting adventure and a daunting challenge. I am immensely grateful to many of you reading this publication for your contributions to the College past and present. Your wisdom, contributions, and support make my new role possible.  I have always been grateful to be engaged in a profession in which the "bottom line" of our efforts is better lives and learning for young  people. That is particularly true as I begin this new responsibility-and this report.

OPPORTUNITIES AND EVENTS

Ana Maria Villegas, 2005 AERA Program Chair has issued a special invitation for members to serve as reviewers, chairs, and discussants for the 2005 Annual Meeting. The meeting's theme is Demography and Democracy in the Era of Accountability. The organization is particularly anxious to ensure "thoughtful and rigorous conversations" that are only possible through the contributions of chairs and discussants. AERA members can volunteer for any of these roles by going to the Annual Meeting Proposal Submission Login screen on the AERA website at www.aera.net/AALogin.aspx.

CALLS FOR PAPERS/PROPOSALS

Another AERA opportunity is the chance to offer a professional development course at the  Annual meeting. Professional development courses may provide training in specific research skills, cover the basics of related disciplines (e.g., anthropology, economics), be problem oriented (e.g., research on children at risk), be professional-development oriented (e.g., mentoring, publication skills/strategies), focus on knowledge for the improvement of practice, or address recent methodological and substantive developments in education research. They may last from 4 hour mini-courses to 2-day workshops.  For additional information see:
