Learning Disabilities Outcomes

 

In addition to the shared outcomes, the graduate program in learning disabilities includes the following.

 

Learning Disability Program Dispositions

Students in the learning disability area will also demonstrate professional skills in individualized educational assessment, educational prescriptions, curriculum modifications and accommodations, adherence to federal and state legal mandates.

 

Program Dispositions are elaborated as follows:

1.                  Individualized educational assessment: tests and other evaluation materials

a.       In the student’s native language or mode of communication unless not feasible to do so

b.      Validated for the specific purpose for which they are used

c.       Administered by trained personnel in conformity with instructions

d.      Tailored to access specific areas of educational need

e.       Designed to reflect the student’s aptitude or achievement level rather than reflecting the student’s disabilities, unless intended to do so

f.        Administered, scored and interpreted in adherence with ethical and legal standards.

2.                  Educational prescriptions develop data-based individual educational strategies and techniques to facilitate student learning

3.                  Curriculum modifications and accommodations:  skills at modifying and changing materials, strategies and educational environments

4.                  Adherence with federal and state legal mandates:  diagnostic prescriptive planning and program implementation consistent with federal and state legal mandates.      

 

Other additional outcomes are linked directly to state and national standards. The LD program has met State of Michigan Standards for teacher certification in the area of Learning Disabilities.  The program has also met the Council for Exceptional Children’s (CEC) National Standards.  These standards are available on from those bodies.

 

Content and pedagogical skills related to professional knowledge:

§         Successful completion of accredited teaching endorsement course sequence

§         LD program area competency exam

§         Completion of supervised practicum experience

§         State Competency exam

§         External evaluation of collaboration with professionals and effectiveness with students

 

Program is aligned with CEC and Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support consortium (INTASC) standards.
