Music Outcomes reflect state and national standards.

 

The EMU Department of Music, first accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) in 1961, was reaccredited most recently after the site visit in 1999. The next NASM process will occur in 2008-9.

-         These criteria are met primarily through the Foundation courses in the MA program in Music, which are a 12-credit core of courses required of all candidates:

                           i.      MUSC 601-Introduction to Graduate Studies

                         ii.      One of the following (based on placement exam):

a.       MUSC 511-Survey of Harmonic Techniques

b.      MUSC 513-Form and Analysis

c.       Theory/Literature elective

                        iii.      Music history/literature course (MUSC 504-America’s Music, MUSC 505-World Music, MUSC 631 Renaissance Music, MUSC 632-Baroque Music, MUSC 633-Music in the Classic Era, MUSC 634-Music in the Romantic Era, MUSC 635-Music of he 20th Century, MUSC 638-The New Music)

                       iv.      Applied music

                         v.      Music electives outside the area of concentration

-         Within the concentration, the following two courses address professional and pedagogical knowledge:

                                                 ii.      Students are also encouraged to take electives available in pertaining to child development and curriculum such as EDPS 501-Psychology of Adolescents, EDPS 207-Young Children in Poverty, EDPS 600-Human Development, or EDPS 614-Psychology of Creativity of Educators. Others include CURR 572-Education of the Exceptional Child, CURR 602-Preschool Education, CURR 620-Issues in the Middle School and junior High Curriculum, and CURR 656-Curriculum Design, Implementation and Evaluation. Other students have taken similar course in the departments of Communication and Theatre Arts or Guidance and Counseling.

             The clientele enrolled in this program (MA-concentration in music education) are all practicing teachers. Sharing of ideas, building of partnerships typically happens among the cohort as an outgrowth of the coursework.
