Specialist Degree Outcomes
In addition to the shared outcomes, the Special program in Special Education includes the following.
Students in the specialist degree program will also demonstrate advanced professional skills in program development and evaluation including modifying and adapting curriculum for persons with special needs in adherence to federal and state legal mandates. The student will also demonstrate knowledge about the impact on family structure and functioning of a student with disabilities.
Program Dispositions are elaborated as follows:
1. Program development and evaluation:
a. Staffing and supervision
b. Evaluation of in-service organization and management
c. Systematic study of curriculum
2. Modifying and adapting curriculum: skills at modifying and changing materials, strategies and educational environments
3. Adherence with federal and state legal mandates: program planning and implementation consistent with federal and state legal mandates.
4. Impact on family structure and functioning: impact of disability on individual, family organization and society.
The Specialist of Arts degree meets Michigan Standards for special education director and special education supervisor approval. These qualifications are available through the Michigan Department of Education website.
Content and pedagogical skills related to professional knowledge:
§ Successful completion of accredited teaching approval course sequence
§ Completion of supervised internship experience
§ Completion of oral and written examinations
§ Evaluation of administrative skill by external field supervisors.
