4. NUMBER OF CANDIDATES
Students in the Eastern Michigan Educational Leadership Program are typically K-12 teachers seeking opportunity for continuing education and aspiring to leadership in public and non-public schools. While many do not pursue formal administrative positions, all exit our courses grounded in an understanding of leadership principles and sensitive to the varied leadership roles available in education, including important roles as teacher leaders. The Department of Leadership and Counseling provides top-quality educational experiences for a student population composed primarily of adult learners who are employed on a full-time basis in their respective fields. Both the leadership segment (which prepares leaders for educational and educationally related agencies) and the counseling segment (which prepares counselors, college student personnel workers, and agency leaders) seek to distinguish themselves in the state of Michigan through graduate degrees that lead to administrative certification, counselor licensure, and school counselor endorsement.
The Department of Leadership and Counseling is divided into two distinct program areas: Educational Leadership and Counseling & Student Affairs Practice. The College of Education, and its constituent departments, is characterized by a network of collaborative links that maximize interaction among faculty and are supported by an administrative structure focused on serving students and supporting faculty and staff. Students enter the Educational Leadership Program at Eastern Michigan University with a variety of career goals (e.g., principal, superintendent, teacher leader). Each student works with their faculty advisor to develop a Plan of Study, inclusive of course work aligned with the Standards for Advanced Programs in Educational Leadership, and appropriate for his or her aspirations. Each plan incorporates required courses and uses departmental electives and cognate courses to meet the individual needs of each student.
