Fete 201 Readings/Discussions

As described in the beginning of this coursepack, it is important that each student take responsibility for the success of the WebCaucus discussions. Making the caucus successful requires not just that you participate, but that your comments help the group analyze and work with the important ideas being addressed. This will require that you use both your own experiences and the required readings to respond to discussion questions. It is expected that each student will participate in the discussion each week. Your participation in each discussion activity will be rated on the following scale.

An average score of 3 is necessary in order to receive credit for this course.

4. Identified and applied multiple ideas, including theories from readings and discussions; made reference to own real life experiences in supporting analysis; tied life experiences to other's ideas and experiences.

3. Identified some theories from readings and discussions in the analysis made few references to own real life experiences in analysis, occasionally tied life experiences to readings or theories.

2. Did not identify or refer to reading material or theories in discussion; comments based largely on personal opinion. Did not refer to own real life experiences in analysis or did not tie life experiences to the discussion in meaningful ways..

1.     Did not complete all the requirements of the assignment.

Autobiography Assignment

The Autobiography Assignment has two parts, one completed at the beginning of the semester and one at the end. Entries must be word-processed and formulated into complete sentences and complete thoughts (unless other arrangements have been made). Please include the questions asked with your answers.

Part I Autobiography

Complete the Cultural Autobiography examining yourself from your date of birth to today. Use the questions in the Cultural Autobiography description at the end of this coursepack for guidance.

Part II Autobiography: Cultural Journey

Reflect upon your experiences with this course as you answer the following questions.

Describe: Describe how the school visitation, readings, discussions, and Pen Pal experience (if applicable), have impacted your thinking about education and diversity. Use examples to clarify your response.

React: What was the effect of this experience? What is your affective response (personal reactions, thoughts, feelings, etc.)?

Interpret: Compare the information you gained for your experience to the information discussed in the text and in class. Did situations and experiences mirror what was in the text/class presentations? Did you find contradictions? Be sure to reference the text and individuals.

Apply: What are the lessons you've learned that can be taken into a classroom setting? What knowledge have you gained about yourself? What do you still need to work on? What will you do and how will you increase your skills in working in a classroom setting?

Reflect back on your Cultural Autobiography and assess what parts, if any, have changed as a result of your experiences in this course.

Autobiographies, too, will be rated on a 4-point scale. A rating of at least 3 for each part is necessary to receive credit for FETE 201. Ratings below assume accurate spelling, grammar, and technical writing. Lack of appropriate professional writing skills is sufficient to rate a score of 1.

Pen Pal Experience

The Pen Pal Experience will be completed by selected sections of FETE 201. Your facilitator will tell you whether or not your section is participating this semester. During the course of the semester, each student in Pen Pal sections will receive a pen pal from a Comer school. The Pen Pal Experience will include establishing a relationship with your pen pal, shadowing our pen pal during your school visitation, and keeping a journal of this experience, which will be turned in at the end of the Pen Pal Experience. Additional information on the Pen Pal Experience is available on the FETE 201 website.
