IRA/Advanced Program in Reading Education

Assessment Plan

The Reading Program at Eastern Michigan University has spent the last two years developing both an undergraduate major/minor in Reading and a totally revised Master's in Reading in response to changes in the state of Michigan's endorsement program. Paperwork for the graduate program was filed in the spring of 2002 and was approved in mid August by Eastern Michigan University.  The courses for the Master's program will be offered for the first time during the academic years 2002-2003 and 2003-2004.  The Reading Program plans to develop its assessment plan during this time frame.

Tentative schedule for assessments:

I.   Assessments upon entry to the Master's in Reading program.

Students accepted into the Master's in Reading program meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate School at Eastern Michigan University.  These requirements are already in place and no further assessments are planned at this time.

II.  Assessments prior to beginning clinical practice.

Students will complete 15 hours in reading before starting their clinical practice.  This fifteen hour sequence concludes with RDNG 685:  Reading Assessment.  The culminating project for this course is an assessment plan for a child with a reading problem.  Criteria and rubrics for the assessment will be developed during the academic year 2002-2003.  The first time this course will be offered is in the fall of 2003.  Data will be collected and analyzed at this point.  The data will be used to determine who proceeds to the next course in the sequence: RDNG 686:  Designing Intervention Programs for Struggling Readers which houses the clinical experience.  Students who do not meet criteria will be asked to meet with the instructor to develop a plan of action. Students who do not successfully meet the requirements of the plan of action will fail the course.

III.  Assessments prior to exiting clinical practice.

Students enrolled in RDNG 686 will be responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of an intervention program for their client.

Criteria and rubrics for the assessment will be developed in the winter of 2003. The course is scheduled to be offered in the winter of 2004. At this time data will be collected and analyzed.  The data will be used to determine who proceeds to the final Master's course in reading:  RDNG 695: The Reading Professional. Students who do not meet criteria will be asked to meet with the instructor to develop a plan of action. Students who do not successfully meet the requirements of the plan of action will fail the course.

IV. Assessments upon completion of the program.

The culminating experience is housed in RDNG 695.  This course will not be offered until the summer of 2004.  Criteria and rubrics for the assessment will be designed in the fall of 2003. Data will be collected and analyzed in the summer of 2004. Students must successfully complete the culminating experience in order to receive their master's degree in reading.

All computerized data collected will be stored in the office of the Graduate Reading Coordinator.
