Program Planning

Educational Specialist (EdS) Degree

In general, the Educational Specialist degree requires a minimum of 32 semester hours beyond the Master’s Degree. In filling out the program of study, the faculty advisor must complete all relevant portions of the program form including specifying the student’s program goal(s). The student’s program goals will determine the number of hours required to complete the program. Courses from a first Master’s degree may not be used toward the 32 hours minimal required course hours on the Specialist Degree. Six hours however maybe used from a second Master’s Degree. A maximum of six hours of transfer credit may be used on the Specialist Degree.

The following coursework or its equivalent is minimally required for the Specialist Degree:

Applied Research Area (8-10 hours)

EDLD 787-789 Internship in Educational Administration (2-4)

Supportive Area (6 hours)

A minimum of 6 hours determined in consultation with program advisor reflective of student’s program goals.

For students seeking the program goal of district level leadership the student must complete the minimum course requirements of the specialist degree stated above and demonstrate competency (see competency requirements) in the following leadership areas; strategic, instructional, organizational, political & community, and the internship. To do so, the student will need to complete the following additional coursework or its equivalent for the Specialist Degree:

For students seeking the program goal of district level leadership and building level leadership (principal, assistant principal) and have not fulfilled the competency requirements, the following coursework or its equivalent are required in addition to the minimum coursework requirements of the specialist degree stated above:

Students must demonstrate competency in the following areas:

Area 5: The Internship

by one of the following:

(1)   Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership with an emphasis on building level leadership from an ELCC approved program.

(2)   Presentation of evidence from coursework taken at another university in a Master’s of Educational Leadership Program. Evidence must include course syllabi indicating objectives and content aligned with the ELCC standards as well as performance activities that demonstrate that the student possesses the knowledge and skills in each of the required areas.

(3)   Preparation of a portfolio of materials, comparable to that of the Master’s in Educational Leadership Program at Eastern Michigan University, and defense of the portfolio before a panel of EDLD faculty where the student will discuss the portfolio and demonstrate knowledge and skill in each area.

(4)   Take the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Exam offered several times each year by Educational Testing Service and present a score on the test that meets or exceeds the average cut score of all states requiring the exam.
