Undergraduate
ESL Section 5
Collaboration
a. Early field experiences: in the TESOL methods class and the TESOL materials and testing classes (410 and 420) students are asked to observe classes; interview classroom teachers, and work with individual students. As this is an add-on endorsement, most of our students have already done field experiences and that often propels them into this area.
b. We do not have an ongoing formal relationship with any of the k-12 schools in the region, but we do have a very strong informal relationship as our graduates are in a variety of settings and welcome novices for observation, tutoring, assisting with content, etc. We have worked with Ypsilanti, Willow Run, Ann Arbor, and had requests for help from South Lyon, Lincoln, Dexter, Chelsea—and not been able to accommodate them due to scheduling and the small number of students enrolled in the program.
c. We are currently working with Latino Outreach of Washtenaw County, housed in Ypsilanti helping Spanish speakers learn English.
