Notes Regarding Required Courses for the Major or Minor in Spanish
1. All Majors and Minors must successfully complete SPNH 343 and 344.
2. All Majors must successfully complete SPNH 443 and 444. All Minors must complete either option I (SPNH 443 and 444) or option II (six additional credits in Spanish at the 300-level or above).
3. All Majors and Minors are strongly encouraged to take at least one culture/civilization course such as SPNH 301 or 302.
4. All Majors and Minors are strongly encouraged to take at least one literature course such as SPNH 341, 342, 351, 352, 445, 448, 449, 450,454, 455, 463, 464, 465.

I. COMMUNICATION Communicate in Languages Other Than English Students engage in conversation, supply and receive information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. (Interpersonal Mode of Communication) Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. (Interpretive Mode of Communication) Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. (Presentational Mode of Communication) Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 are met to different degrees at different levels, but are all satisfied by the courses listed above. All three communicative modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) are used throughout the Spanish program, but receive special attention in the courses listed with each standard. |

II. CULTURES Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures Students Demonstrate and understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied. Students demonstrate and understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied. All courses listed under Standard II: Cultures deal with the products, practices, and perspectives of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. SPNH 301, 302, 361, and 446/447 emphasize the relationship between practices and perspectives of the culture studied (Standard 2.1). SPNH 341/342, 351/352, 445, 448, 449, 450, 454, 455, 463, 464, and 465 emphasize the relationship between products and perspectives of the culture studied (Standard 2.2). |

III. CONNECTIONS Connect with Other Disciplines and Acquire Information Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language. Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures. Culture courses such as SPNH 301 and 302 reinforce and advance students' knowledge of other disciplines such as art history, economics, geography, history, music history, and political science. SPNH 361, 446/447 reinforce and advance students' knowledge about banking, economics, finance, human resources, marketing, and other areas of the field of business and management. Literature courses such as SPNH 341/342, 351/352, 445, 448, 449, 450, 454, 455, 463, 464, and 465 strengthen and advance students' knowledge of other disciplines such as history, literature, and political science. In all upper-level courses taught in Spanish, students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures. |

IV. COMPARISONS Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own. Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own. In all upper-level courses taught in Spanish, students demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied with their own. In all upper-level courses taught in Spanish, students also demonstrate an understanding of culture through comparisons of the culture studied with their own. The culture classes such as SPNH 301 and 302 and the literature classes such as 341/342, 351/352, 445, 448, 449, 450, 454, 455, 463, 464, and 465 compare cultures within the Spanish-speaking world as well as the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries with those of the United States. In FLAN 411, students focus on the comparisons of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures and how the differences relate to effective teaching. |

V. COMMUNITIES Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting. Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment. In SPNH 301, 302, 361, and 446/447 students use the Internet to make actual contact with the Spanish-speaking world; they also read authentic Spanish-language newspapers, magazines, and conduct research. In FLAN 411, students are required to attend the Michigan Foreign Language Association annual conference. All Majors and Minors in Spanish for Secondary Certification are actively encouraged to participate in El Club de Espaņol as sponsored by the Spanish program. All
