Welcome to the web site for Eastern Michigan University's 2003 National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation and State of Michigan approval documentation!

In 1997, we were the first institution in the country authorized to submit professional education accreditation/state approval materials electronically instead of on paper. The primary purpose of this 2003 site, which was started immediately after the 1997 NCATE/State visit, is to make our materials available electronically to Specialized Professional Association (SPA) reviewers, to the 2003 Board of Examiners team members, and to reviewers at the state level. In addition, this is to make our materials available to other significant parties in the NCATE accreditation and state approval processes, to the professional education community at large, and of considerable importance, to the total Eastern Michigan University community of faculty, staff, and students.

By clicking on the appropriate headings given in this Institutional Report, the reader will be taken to the material that we have prepared on the subject. Numerous links take the reader to greater detail on most matters. In addition, this web site includes a search mechanism.

Much appreciation is expressed to Robert Winterhalter, Patti Maihofer, Grover Thomas, Kirk Nagel, Bert Greene, and many others for assistance in the preparation of the original 1997 web site, portions of which have remained intact or have been updated for the 2003 reviews as well. While the substance of the 2003 web site represents the contributions of far too many people to mention here, but whose assistance is deeply appreciated, the site development itself has been primarily performed by the COE webmaster, Valerie Hughes, assisted by Srinivas Paluri and Pawan Chennama. Deep appreciation is expressed to Ms. Hughes and her team.

The initial support of the late Ronald Collins, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the continuing support and encouragement of his successor in that office, Paul Schollaert, have been significant in numerous ways, not the least of which has been to permit us to make this web site possible at a high level of quality.

Our programming is guided by the following theme statements:

Caring professional educators for a diverse and democratic society. (Initial)

Inquiry, advocacy, and leadership in education for a diverse and democratic society.(Advanced)
