Exhibit 4.2
List of Proficiencies Related to Diversity Expected of Candidates

Experiences with diversity permeate Eastern Michigan University.  The geographic area in which EMU is located and from which EMU draws most of its students includes substantial and many types of diversity.  The EMU student body and faculty and staff members represent appreciable diversity.

There are various diversity-related requirements in the curriculum.  EMU's general education requirements call for a course in "cross-cultural or international" studies selected from a list of relevant courses.  Many of the majors and minors require courses with diversity-related topics, as is the case with numerous required courses in the advanced programs.  In addition to the "content knowledge" included in these courses, "diversity" is infused into the "pedagogical content knowledge" and "professional knowledge and skills" courses of both the initial and advanced programs.  Such courses as SOFD 328 Schools in a Multicultural Society, FETE 201 Field Experience in Teacher Education, SOFD 550 Philosophy, Ethics and Teaching, and SOFD 580 Sociology of Education are only a few of the examples that could be given where "diversity" receives major attention in the course.

Knowledge about "diversity" in children and youth is assessed at multiple points and in multiple ways during the course of each candidate's program.  However, all of these activities are but means to an end; an end that is reflected in dispositions and behavior related to diversity that is appropriately positive.

The dispositions related to diversity expected of a completer of any EMU professional educator preparation program are these:

1.  Values multiple aspects of diversity

2.  Respects children and adults of various

cultural backgrounds

ethnicities

religions

sexual orientations

social classes

abilities

political beliefs

etc.
