Joan provided the latest update on networking and database consolidation in the Office of Academic Services, including how the OAS is staying connected to the University-level Data Warehouse initiative.
Joan described the emerging COE “super database”, which she calls PICES, for “Potential, Initial, and Continuing Education Students” database. She distributed samples of current database fields, descriptors, etc.
She also shared examples of the types of data requests that she is receiving from the Dean, most related to the Dean’s writing of the NCATE report.
The “critical issues” subcommittee of Pat Pokay, Don Staub, and David Anderson met recently, and Pat provided a report of their discussions. This included the following recommendations:
1. The DAAC should set up a protocol for finding out what data is needed in the COE and what data might be needed in the future. The focus would be on student learning, in addition to current, urgent accreditation needs.
2. As the COE database expands, it should have two main parts: COE-level data (managed through Joan’s office), and department- or program-level data, managed (inputted and housed and accessed?) “locally”.
3. The DAAC should develop and implement “education plans” for sharing the goals of the DAAC with faculty, staff and administration, in the COE and in other EMU colleges affiliated with the COE, for allowing faculty input, etc.
It was agreed that the committee should focus its immediate attention on #3 above. To this end, Jim B., Nelson M. and Pat P. will meet on Sept. 3 to develop charges for two subcommittees:
One subcommittee, consisting of Don S., Pat P. and Barb. G. will develop an education plan for COE faculty and administration.
The other subcommittee, consisting of Don S., Georgea L. and Peggy L. will develop an education plan for faculty and administration in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Technology.
The two subcommittees will report at our next meeting.
Jim Berry led a discussion of a possible DAAC tie-in with
the Renaissance Project. The COE is about to enter its fifth and final year of
participation in the project; the issue is whether or not the COE (and perhaps
the DAAC) should consider involvement in a second, five-year program.
Tentatively, David A. will travel to
