The committee has expanded to include Barb Gorenflo, Director of COE Student Teaching (she will join us next time.)

Akosua provided members with an update on progress in OAS re: networking computers, consolidating databases, etc. Six ODS computers are now networked. Several databases are now consolidated.  Akosua provided a handout that sketched current and future work

Joan expanded on that report by discussing what data are being collected, from where, etc. She also provided a sketch of the vision for both the local COE version of a consolidated database, and how it should (might?) jibe with the developing EMU Data Warehouse.

Joan also presented results of her early work on a “data dictionary’, which provides specific definitions of terms which will become more and more important as these projects move forward. (The definition of a “grad student”, for instance, is complex.)

Dr. Berry shared with the committee an apparent proposal from the Dean that would both “upgrade” and change the nature of this committee. The upgrade would be elevation to COE Council status. The key change is that the committee was cease to be ad hoc, would have a more delineated set of charges, would perhaps lose flexibility, but would gain credibility. There was agreement that the proposed committee (“Professional Education Assessment Committee”) would be a different creature than the presently constituted group. The ramifications of the proposal will be discussed at the next meeting.

General discussion included review of emerging issues; i.e.; data accessibility, data entry, faculty issues, nature of data included, etc. The need for members of this committee to stay in touch with Mark Byrd’s office re: university-wide Data Warehouse progress was agreed upon.

Arts and Sciences faculty member Peggy Ligget discussed current data/accreditation issues and challenges in A&S. It was agreed that she would meet with Pat Pokay and Joan Quinlan for information and guidance.

Next meeting: Wednesday, July 2, 2003, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. in the 206 conference room.
