Joan provided an update on networking and database consolidation in the Office of Academic Affairs, including new efficiencies:

There is now a permanent ISP address for the local quasi-network.

Much more work can be done at the front desk, with less running from office to office and computer to computer.

The office has in effect instituted an access security system.

This work continues.

Nelson proposed that the committee begin wrestling with “critical issues” which accompany the data initiative.  A subcommittee was formed to define and to begin to address those issues. Pat Pokay, Don Staub, and David Anderson will provide the full committee with a report at the August meeting, the intention being that the full committee will then devote much of its time to discussion of those issues.

The committee agreed that we should move toward acceptance of the Dean’s May 6 proposal. The Dean proposed the establishment of a Professional Education Faculty committee, with the present DAAC committee becoming the Professional Education Assessment Committee within that new structure. At issue is whether the DAAC’s current successful ad hoc work (database consolidation, etc.) would suffer under the Dean’s proposal. It was agreed that Nelson would work with Jim Berry to reconcile the desire to accept the proposal with the desire to maintain current momentum. Nelson will provide a concrete recommendation at the August meeting.

Brain Filipiak agreed to quickly gather committee member summer availability information and to distribute that info to all members.

Next meeting: Wednesday, August 27, 2003, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. in the 206 conference room.
