Performance Assessment: Lesson Modification Activity
SPGN 251: Education of Students with Exceptionalities
The Lesson Modification Activity, developed to serve as an assessment component in SPGN 251, Education of Students with Exceptionalities, was piloted during the Winter, 2003 semester. Dr. Nancy Halmhuber utilized the poster version of the activity in two sections of SPGN 251, each section enrolling 33 students. Ms. Sarah Ginsberg employed the poster version of the activity in her section of SPGN 251 with an enrollment of 60 students. Dr. Lynne Rocklage piloted the written report version of the activity in her section of SPGN 251 with an enrollment of 78 students. A total of 204 students, all at an initial preparation level, were involved in the pilot project.
The outcome data is displayed as follows:

Based on the outcomes of the pilot project, it would appear that student performance on the Lesson Modification Activity differed based on whether a poster presentation or written report was assigned. Although the content of the two versions of the activity were identical, the structure of the tasks were different.
The pilot project was extended into the summer semester and scoring data will be presented in terms of performance within the separate scoring rubric areas as well as the total score for the project. This type of data collection may assist in determining where the tasks differ and perhaps identify possible strategies which will make the tasks more equal.
