The first cohort of Woodrow Wilson Fellows (see "Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Program to prepare science and mathematics teachers") are now anchored in their Detroit Public Schools for a semester of intensive pre-student teaching. The plan is for them to intern (student teach) in DPS this Winter, finish up course work in Spring and Summer 2012, then begin teaching in high-needs districts (such as Detroit) next Fall. We are already working on recruiting cohort #2, which will arrive in May.
The Fellows are a most interesting bunch. To wit: Mathematics Fellows Melissa Karjala plans to swim the English Channel in her spare time. Really? Along with five other Ann Arbor area swimmers, she'll be attempting to break the world’s women’s relay record. The attempt is also a fundraiser for the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease).
