"People often underestimate the value of space and how it creates a sense of community," said Dean Jann Joseph. In considering renovations to the John W. Porter Building, one goal was to create an aesthetically pleasing environment that offered places for people to pause and reflect.

Dean Joseph also wanted the Porter Building to continue offering the latest technologies, and over the summer, several SMART Boards and new computers were installed in many of the classrooms.

Also, new directional signage was installed on all three levels of Porter making it easier to navigate throughout the building and several new pieces of artwork were installed. Many interior corridors received a fresh coat of paint that coordinates with the decor of the space.

In paying tribute to the alums, the Education Alumni Hall of Fame gallery was relocated to an area on the second floor that will allow for future expansion and a Donor Recognition Wall was established on the third floor.

"We wanted a special place to recognize and honor the continued support and contributions from our donors whom ensure the College of Education remains distinguished," said Joseph.

Lastly, three automated external defibrillators (AED's) were installed on each floor (128 Porter, 206 Porter and 313 Porter) and to-date, over 10 faculty, staff and graduate assistants have completed certified training on both the AED's and CPR certification from the American Heart Association. Training is open to faculty and staff across campus. To register for an upcoming training session, contact Kathryn Wilhoff, director of Environmental Health & Safety, at 734.487.0794 or kwilhoff@emich.edu.
