POLICY FOR ON-THE-JOB STUDENT TEACHING

College of Education
Eastern Michigan University

Applicants for On-The-Job student teaching must be post-baccalaureate students who have been employed for a minimum of one calendar year as an Emergency Substitute in a Regular Position in a critical shortage area. The classroom subject area in this Regular Position must match the area of certification the student is seeking and needs to be in a critical shortage area. Student teachers must be placed in approved sites for student teaching.

Students who meet the above criteria must submit a letter requesting On-The-Job placement at the time of application for student teaching. Letters of application need to include a written evaluation and recommendation from the building principal, a written commitment from the building principal to observe/evaluation the student teacher; a recommendation from the major academic department; and a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Students who are approved for On-The-Job student teaching are required to meet all other standards and requirements of student teachers as outlined in the Handbook for Student Teaching (pdf file). Eastern Michigan University reserves the right to cluster student teachers for peer support, training, and the convenience of the university supervisor. Students must register for the appropriate number of hours and the school site must be within forty miles of Eastern Michigan University.
