Collaborative School Improvement Program (C-SIP)

What is C-SIP?

Eastern Michigan University's Collaborative School Improvement Program (C-SIP) offers school building/district staff members a method for improving instructional outcomes. The C-SIP process is an uncomplicated, straightforward problem-solving system which provides an interface between theory, research, and scientific data on the one hand, and knowledge and understanding of the educational setting on the other. What distinguishes C-SIP from traditional school improvement systems is the equity given to teachers as equal stakeholders in school improvement. The C-SIP process is aligned with the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Public Act 25 guidelines. The essence of the C-SIP model is constructive change through shared decision making at the building or district level. Emphasis is placed on staff collaboration to achieve school improvement. The staff identify needs within an individual building which reflect their district mission statement and school improvement plan, and the C-SIP model provides structure and direction through a clearly defined six-step process.

The Six Step Process of C-SIP

Step 1 - Awareness, Readiness, Commitment
Step 2 - School Improvement Goals
Step 3 - Development and Approval of Plan
Step 4 - Implementation and Monitoring
    Step 5 - Evaluation
Step 6 - Reassessment of 3-5 Year Plan

Collaboration is a vital component of the C-SIP process. This collaborative link assures that the building, local school district, intermediate school district, Eastern Michigan University, and the Michigan Department of Education each assume important roles in ensuring the success of local projects. When implementing the C-SIP change process, the local school district project teams are supported by the university facilitators who link the teams with the resources and expertise required to achieve the full potential of their projects. EMU has involved over 165 schools in C-SIP projects since its inception in 1981. What follows are the C-SIP projects for this year.
