Eisenhower Higher Education Professional Development Grant
- Supporting beginning Mathematics and Science Teachers

The Supporting Beginning Mathematics and Science Teachers project is a collaboration among Eastern Michigan University, Lincoln Consolidated Schools, Willow Run Community Schools, Ypsilanti Public Schools (herein after referred to as the Consortium), and the Livingston and Washtenaw Mathematics and Science Center (LAWMASC) to support beginning (first, second, and third year) mathematics and science teachers (K-12). The purpose of the program is to supplement the Consortium's current efforts in developing a system of preparation and support for beginning teachers by developing and implementing scientific and mathematical investigations commensurate to national, state, and local educational standards.

Through the Supporting Beginning Mathematics and Science Teachers project, novice teachers will experience the scientific-inquiry process they will create for their students. Teachers will pursue professional growth with support of colleagues and scientists throughout the school year at their own work sites - their schools and local communities. Stakeholders include beginning teachers from the Consortium, the Livingston-Washtenaw Mathematics and Science Center, Washtenaw County Department of Environmental and Infrastructure Services, scientists and researchers from Eastern Michigan University (EMU), Collaborative School Improvement Program (C-SIP), and the EMU Center for Environmental Information Technology and Applications (CEITA). Components of the project include: material development, implementation with on-site technological and online support, and mini-grants for community problem solving.

This is a one year grant which will conclude in November, 2002 with a one-day conference where the participants will present their projects and their preliminary findings following one semester of implementation. Please watch this site for details on the date, time, and location of the conference. All are welcome to attend!
