Volunteers in Mission (Haiti, West Indies)

March 2-12, 2001. (EMU winter recess)
Met with the Principal of the Gomier Elementary School and area superintendent of Methodist schools. Topics concerning education in Haiti and in Gomier were discussed. The school was on the church grounds.
Spoke to each class in the Elementary School several times throughout the week.
Taught the children songs in English and they taught the VIM team songs in return.
Exchanged ideas with the teachers.
Took school materials and books from the U.S. to the school in Gomier.

Title of Presentation: Asian - American Children's Literature: History, Classroom Use and Resources.

Presented Tuesday May 1, 2001.

Reviewer for the Association for Childhood Education International. Reviews new children's books and
these are published in the ACEI journal, Childhood Education.

Advisor, Past-President and Charter member of the Organization of Teacher Educators in Reading, a Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association which has a membership of 100,000. OTER was officially accepted by IRA as a special interest group in 1975. The OTER membership consists of over 450 teacher educators from across the United States and some foreign countries. I attend and give input at the executive board meetings.

Chair of Committee of "Count Me In" for Organization of Teacher Educators in Reading Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association.

Member, SIG Group: balanced Reading Instruction, a Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association.
