"The End of Europe?" What does Turkey's entry into European Union mean
for Europe --- and the rest of the World?

One of Turkey’s longstanding goals has been admission to the European Union (EU). To this end, Turkey put into effect significant reforms in the area of cultural rights of the minorities and in terms of abolishing capital punishment. In addition, structural changes in the economy continue to comply with EU guidelines and standards. In the midst of these, the November 2002 elections gave the Justice and Development Party (AKP), the so called “religious” party, a solid governing majority in the Parliament.

These Panels interpreted recent political developments in Turkey, focusing especially on the political, economic, and cultural ramifications of Turkey’s membership in the EU.

Prof. Atilla Yaprak, Wayne State University
talking to the students at EMU after his
presentation on "Whether or not EU and Turkey make a good match."

Asim Erdilek, Case Western reserve University, answering some of the questions from guests and students about his presentation on "Implications of the new Justice & Development (AK) party government for Turkish-EU relations and for inward foreign investment from the EU and elsewhere."
