Nurturing our Future as African American Females: A Courageous Conversation

conference logoMark your calendars, and plan to attend the 2008 African American Females' Conference on September 26, 2008. Educators, P-12 professional staff, community leaders, family members, and students from Michigan and across the country will gather to discuss issues and challenges confronting today's African American females.

The conference is hosted by Eastern Michigan University's College of Education with suport through its Office of Urban Education and Educational Equity (OUEEE) an outreach office of the College of Education and will be held in the new EMU Student Center. The conference is made possible by a generous grant from the McGregor Fund of Detroit.

We are proud to offer an innovative approach to facilitate the engagement of diverse populations. Representatives from institutions and communities across the state will develop a progressive agenda focusing on African American females in school and society. Attendees will participate in presentations on selected topics followed by in-depth problem solving discussions.

We are seeking proposals that focus on African American girls and women's issues on these topics:

  • P-12 Education
  • Higher Education
  • Technology
  • Family/Parenting
  • Spirituality
  • Leadership
  • Health
  • Social/Emotional Issues
  • Community Based Programs

African American Male Summit, June 2006

mars studentEastern Michigan University's College of Education received a Kellogg grant to fund summit for African American males in K-12 education. A $41,555 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation helped Eastern Michigan University’s College of Education plan and conduct a statewide summit on convergent issues impacting African American males in pre K-12 education. more...

The college hosted the Summit, on Friday June 9, 2006 at the EMU Convocation Center. The day-long event focused on a multitude of issues impacting African American males in school and society. Representatives from pre K-12 schools, higher education and various community, social service and religious organizations participated.
