Call for Papers

Austerity and Authoritarianism in Public Education

Deadline: June 15, 2013
Deepening inequality, widespread poverty, and increasing segregation are pervasive within the current US education system. Anti-democratic practices and relationships have come to embody the new normal, amid the pervasive spirit of "austerity" and "innovative" corporate reform in education.

The consequences for stakeholders are manifested in a variety of ways, from school closures to school "turnarounds"; from mass firings to restricted curricula and pedagogy; from de-unionization and privatization efforts to the limitation of local decision-making power on substantive policy issues.

For our upcoming issue, PowerPlay invites papers that address the experiences of students, teachers, families and communities as they deal with austerity and authoritarianism in education. We also seek papers that detail the collateral casualties: students with special needs, poor students and students of color, deprofessionalization of teachers, marketization of curricula, restricted pedagogical opportunities, and diminished community involvement in public affairs.

Submissions must be received by June 15, 2013. Authors are requested to adhere to PowerPlay submission guidelines. For additional information contact Clayton Hall at chall47@emich.edu.
