Section 5:  Collaborations/partnerships for Chemistry

a.  In Chemistry, field experiences outside of the student teaching experience are limited by the nature of this laboratory intensive science.  The students are encouraged to bring in their own samples for experiments when practical:  aspirin samples in CHEM 122 for the “Colorimetric Analysis of Aspirin”; water samples in CHEM 124 for the “Analysis of Aluminum in Water Samples”; toothpaste samples for “Fluoride Concentration by Electrochemical Methods” in CHEM 281; and cereal, hair, and dog food samples in various laboratory experiments in CHEM 381.  Additionally, there is a usually a true field experience in CHEM 381 in the form of a trip to the University of Michigan Phoenix Nuclear reactor for a neutron activation experiment.  Optional field trips to local chemistry sites are also offered during most school years, such as Pfizer and Dow Chemicals.  And finally, most upper division laboratory classes require library work to find important literature values for physical properties like melting points or boiling points.
