Eastern Michigan University offers only K-12 teacher certification in Japanese.  All students seeking teacher certification in Japanese must complete the following requirements, resulting in a teaching MAJOR in Japanese language and culture.

Eastern Michigan University does not offer a Secondary minor or a secondary major in Japanese.

Group I Required Language Development Courses

Students seeking a major in Japanese as part of a K-12 teaching certificate must complete the following six required courses (18 credits).

JPNE 344   Japanese Conversation

JPNE 345   Japanese Composition

JPNE 361   Japanese for International Trade

JPNE 444   Advanced Japanese Conversation

JPNE 446      Business Japanese I

      JPNE 447    Business Japanese II

 

Group II  Required Literature Course

Students seeking a major in Japanese as part of a K-12 teaching certificate must complete the following required literary survey course (3 credits).

     JPNE 445  Survey of Japanese Literature

 

Group III: Restricted Civilization and Culture Courses

Students seeking a major in Japanese as part of a K-12 teaching certificate must complete one of the following culture and civilization courses (3 credits).

ANTH385  Culture of Japan

     JPNE 448  Readings on Japanese Culture

Group IV: Required Immersion Experience

Students seeking a major in Japanese as part of a K-12 teaching certificate must complete an approved 6-credit cultural and linguistic immersion experience of at least one semester in duration. 

JPNE 379      Study Abroad in Japan

 

Group V: Required Capstone Seminar

Students seeking K-12 certification in Japanese must complete the following required capstone course (3 credits). 

     JPNE 494 Seminar in Japanese Studies

 

Note:  Majors seeking  K-12 certification  must take FLAN 411 and FLAN 412.
