Members of the SOFD Program Advisory Board serve three year terms and provide advice, guidance and feedback to the Social Foundations of Education Faculty.

John Lupinacci
John Lupinacci, M.A. - Doctoral Candidate in Urban Education, Eastern Michigan University

John Lupinacci is a doctoral candidate in the Urban Education program at Eastern Michigan University, where he is also adjunct faculty and teaches pre-service teachers using an EcoJustice approach. He has taught at the secondary level in Detroit and is co-author of the book EcoJustice Education: Toward Diverse, Democratic, and Sustainable Communities. His experience as a high school math and science teacher, an outdoor environmental educator, and a community activist all contribute to examining the relationships between schools and the reproduction of the cultural roots of unjust social suffering and environmental degradation.

James Robert, M.A. - Philosophy Teacher, Pioneer High School, Ann Arbor, MI

James Robert received a B.A. in History/Philosophy in 1987 and an M.A. in Social Foundations in 2006, both from Eastern Michigan University.

Paula Sizemore
Paula Sizemore, M.A. - Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, Ypsilanti Middle School

Along with promoting professional growth and instruction strategies, Paula Sizemore assists teachers with developing multiculturally relevant curriculum to enhance student engagement in Math/Science courses. Paula received an M.A. in Social Foundations (Teaching for Diversity) from EMU in 2007.

Mary F. Spence
Mary F. Spence, Ph.D. - School Psychologist, Washtenaw Intermediate School District, Ann Arbor, MI

Mary Spence has worked in the field of psychology for over 25 years in mental health, correctional and most recently school settings, with a Ph.D. in Clinical and Educational Psychology from Wayne State University.  Issues of diversity have been of interest for many years and Mary looks forward to opportunities collaborate on improving universal access for all students within education.

Jen Eastridge
Jen Eastridge, B.F.A. - artist, educator and activist

Jen Eastridge has worked in both, formal and informal educational settings as a teacher, a parent involvement community partner, an elementary artist-in-residence and neighborhood "creative playtime" coordinator. Coming from generations of educators, Eastridge has always felt energized and connected while working in a hands-on learning environment. Through her work, she strives to develop innovative, artistic experiences for young people that integrate creativity, nature, social activism and awareness.  Eastridge holds a BFA in Art History & Museum Studies from the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Scott Whitehouse
Scott Whitehouse, M.A. - Executive Director of HOPE Community Center

Scott Whitehouse earned his M.A. from EMU in Social Foundations in 2005. His principal interests during his studies were Eco-Justice Education and Sustainability.  He now works as the Executive Director of HOPE Community Center, a nonprofit organization in Lenawee County whose mission is to empower adults with disabilities and promote their citizenship.

Natalie Holbrook, M.A. - Co-Director American Friends Service Committee Michigan Criminal Justice Program, Ann Arbor, MI

Natalie Holbrook graduated from EMU with a Social Foundations MA in 2007.  She has worked with the American Friends Service Committee as a prisoner rights advocate/activist for the last five years.

Susan Santone
Susan Santone, M.A. - Executive Director Creative Change Educational Solutions, Ypsilanti, MI

Susan Santone a part-time lecturer in the Department of Teacher Education, and is also the Executive Director of Creative Change Educational Solutions, a nonprofit organization focused on sustainability education. After earning certifications in social studies, music, and English as a Second Language, she pursued an interdisciplinary Master’s degree from the School for International Training with a focus on multicultural- and sustainability education and organizational management.

Clara Thiry
Clara Thiry, M.A. - Kindergarten teacher, Paddock Elementary School, Milan, MI

Clara Thiry lives and works in Milan, Michigan.  She holds an undergraduate degrees and an M.A. in Social Foundations of Education from Eastern Michigan University and has taught various grades--kindergarten, first, and fourth.  One of her goals as an educator is to help young children discuss, question, and investigate issues surrounding fairness.

Tom Hoetger
Tom Hoetger, M.A. - Social Studies Teacher Western International High School, Detroit, MI

Tom Hoetger earned his MA in Social Foundations from Eastern Michigan University, currently teaches social studies in the Detroit Public Schools at Western International High School, and is a founding member of the Michigan chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (Michigan-NAME).  Tom teaches from a critical perspective that focuses on civic literacy that strives to develop a sense of student and community empowerment; a belief that their voices are valued and that they could have an impact on changing their community.

Sandra Spickard Prettyman, Ph.D. - Associate Professor Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership University of Akron, Akron, OH

Sandra Prettyman holds an M.A. in Social Foundations of Education from Eastern Michigan University and a Ph.D, in Theory and Social Foundations from the University of Toledo; She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in social and cultural foundations of education and doctoral courses in qualitative research methods.
