Undergraduate Programs

  • Emotional Impairment

    • Prospective majors should be aware that the basic philosophy of the program is oral communication; however, students are exposed to manual communication during their course of study. All students are considered provisional majors until such time as they successfully complete SPHI 391, Language for the Hearing Impaired and pass a language proficiency examination.

  • Speech/Language Pathology
    • The program in Speech-Language Pathology offers the Bachelor of Science and the Master of Arts degrees. Completion of all requirements through the M.A. degree is required for teacher certification and meets the requirements for Clinical Certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Students may elect a teacher training or non-teacher training track.
    • Upon completion of a minimum of 124 semester hours (reflecting all requirements in basic studies and undergraduate major and minor sequences), the student will be granted the bachelor of science degree without certification. For those students electing the teacher training track, certification is issued on completion of the master's degree.

Special Education students must complete a major of at least 36 hours, including the department's core courses listed below, and a major concentration chosen from the department's six programs: emotionally impaired, hearing impaired, mentally impaired, physical and otherwise health impaired, speech and language impaired, and visually impaired.

Students must complete all courses specified in their major concentration in addition to meeting the basic studies requirements and other College of Education requirements. Students must select elementary or secondary certification and elementary or secondary endorsement.
