A Professional Education Certificate requires completion of 18 semester hours after the issuance of the Michigan Provisional Certificate or a master's degree in a field related to teaching earned at any time.
Coursework must support either:
- A coherent plan for professional development that is appropriate for the teaching context,
- Development of new knowledge and/or skills in existing endorsement areas, or
- The addition of a new endorsement area.
At least 12 credits are required from EMU and six credits may be transferred if pre-approved by the certification coordinator. No SB-CEUs may be used, and no community college credits will be accepted unless pre-approved.
Satisfy Michigan reading requirements:
- Elementary teachers must have six credit hours of reading methodology and secondary teachers must have three credit hours of reading methodology.
- All teachers must complete an additional three credit hour course in reading diagnostics in order to be recommended for the initial professional certificate. The reading diagnostics courses at EMU are as follows: RDNG 503 is for elementary teachers and RDNG 504 is for secondary teachers.
If you are using transfer credits, have an official transcript from the other school sent to the Office of Admissions, P.O. Box 970, EMU, Ypsilanti, MI 48197.
Demonstrate three years of successful teaching experience (at least 150 days per year) following the issuance of and within the endorsement area(s) on your Michigan Provisional certificate. This teaching experience should be documented on the Experience Report (pdf). Completed Experience Reports should be sent to Amy Eastman, Coordinator of Continuing Certification, 206 Porter Building, EMU, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, FAX 734-487-7089, amy.eastman@emich.edu.
When you meet all requirements for the Professional Education Certificate, apply for your updated certificate through the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS). Because the Michigan Department of Education is transitioning to MOECS, they are not accepting applications for any type of teacher certification from November 15, 2010 through February 7, 2011. MOECS will be activated beginning February 8, 2011. |
