If you want to become a special education teacher, there are three major components to the courses that you must take.
- You will be required to complete a group of general education courses.
- You must complete a major from among the special education majors and a minor from among certain minors.
- You will complete your studies with a series of professional education courses, concluding with student teaching.
The following majors are available as elementary or secondary endorsements:
Special Education Majors on the Elementary Track
- Emotional Impairment (EI)
- Hearing Impairment (HI)
- Cognitive (Mental) Impairment (CI)
- Physical Impairment & Other Health Impairment (POHI)
- Speech and Language Impairment (SLI), requires a master’s degree in order to earn a teaching certificate
- Visual Impairment (VI)
Special Education Majors on the Secondary Track
- Emotional Impairment (EI)
- Hearing Impairment (HI)
- Cognitive (Mental) Impairment (CI)
- Physical Impairment & Other Health Impairment (POHI)
- Speech and Language Impairment (SLI), requires a master’s degree in order to earn a teaching certificate
- Visual Impairment (VI)

- Speech and Language Impairment (SLI) Note: the health care track does not lead to a teaching certificate.
