COE Home / Students / Why EMU?: Getting Started
If you are a middle school or high school student, there is much you can do now to prepare your self to become an excellent and highly employable teacher. Talk to your school counselor about your interests. Talk to your favorite teachers about the rewards they find in their work. Volunteer to work with younger people and get some valuable experience in that way. Be active in school organizations. Accomplish
the highest grades that you possibly can. Prepare
to achieve the highest scores on college admissions
tests, such as the ACT and the SAT that you
possibly can. Take all the college preparatory
courses in such areas as English and mathematics
as your school offers.
Your First Step
Becoming a Teacher During your first two years of college, you should concentrate on the EMU general education (basic studies) courses required for your intended major and minor. During the semester immediately after you complete 56 semester hours of course work, you must apply for admission to the teacher education program. (For a full-time student this would be at about the end of the sophomore year.)
