Elementary Education (Grades K-8)

EMU prepares teachers for elementary education (K-5) and middle level teaching (6-8). An elementary teaching certificate allows you to teach grades K-5. If you wish to teach at the middle school level, grades 6-8, you must take the subject area test in your major or minor.

If you want to become an elementary teacher, there are three major components to the courses that you must take:

1. You will complete the Liberal Arts Major in Elementary Education.
2. You have a choice of completing either a second major or two minors.
3. You will complete your studies with a series of professional education courses, concluding with student teaching.

• Liberal Arts Major in Elementary Education

Choose a second major from:

• Early Childhood Education**
• Integrated Elementary Science
• Language Arts Group*
• Mathematics for Elementary Teaching
• Reading*
• Social Studies Group

Or choose two minors from:

• Integrated Elementary Science
• Language Arts Group*
• Mathematics for Elementary Teaching
• Reading*

One minor can be from:

• Teaching English as a Second Language Minor (TESOL)
• French Language
• German Language
• Spanish Language

*	Cannot combine Language Arts and Reading.
**	Requires a second semester of student teaching.
