Admissions Questions

Where can I find information about application deadlines, the application process and form(s)?

You can locate forms in the online Graduate Student Orientation Handbook and on the Office of Records and Registration web page. [Scroll through the web pages to locate the desired information.]

Can I apply online? How do I get the form?

You can apply for admission online. All graduate forms are located online on the What Do I Do Next? web page for the Graduate School. You will see a list of downloadable files on the right side of the screen. You can download any of the forms that you need.

I was admitted through Extended Programs & Educational Outreach but I don't know who my adviser is.

When you are admitted through Extended Programs & Educational Outreach, you are admitted as a 'self-improvement' or 'non-degree student'. Advisers are assigned when students are admitted to specific programs (e.g., EDMT- MA, EDMT - Certificate). You can contact the Department of Teacher of Education at 734.487.3260 to meet with one of the EDMT faculty for more details.

What is a self-improvement or non-degree student status?

Self-improvement or non-degree admission status applies to students who do not wish to pursue a degree program, or who have not met Graduate School or departmental admissions requirements. A self-improvement/non-degree student is admitted to Eastern Michigan University (EMU), typically through Extended Programs & Educational Outreach, but is not officially admitted to a specific graduate program. Admission of self-improvement or non-degree student status enables you to enroll in graduate-level classes at EMU.

As a self-improvement or non-degree student you can transfer up to 12 credit hours of courses toward a degree program as long as the courses are in compliance with the required courses in the desired program.

I want to transfer courses in from another University. How do I do that?

To transfer courses from another University you must submit the Request for Transfer of Credit Form. [Scroll through the web pages to locate the desired information.] Your request will be considered and you will be contacted when a decision has been made.

The application requires a Personal Statement. What should it include, and how long should it be?

The Personal Statement should include information about why you want to attend EMU’s graduate program, what your future goals are and how they incorporate your EMU education, and why you would be a good candidate for the program. Statements do not need to be longer than one page.

How long does it take to hear back from EMU regarding my admission to the University?

Once all your application materials have been received, the Office of Admissions forwards your information to the College of Education - Department of Teacher Education for an admission decision. Typically the process takes anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks.

How do I know if all my materials have been received?

You can contact the Office of Admissions at 734.487.3060 or the College of Education (COE) Department of Teacher Education at 734.487.3260. You can also email the EDMT Graduate Coordinator.
