Frequently Asked Questions

Teacher Certification &
Ed Tech Endorsement

Teacher Certification

Do I have to have a State of Michigan teaching certification to be admitted to either the MA or Certificate program?

No, teacher certification [in any state] is not a requirement for admission to either the EDMT MA or EDMT Graduate Certificate program. You do need to have an undergraduate degree.

I want to be certified to teach. Will your master's program help me do that?

No, our master's program is not a teacher preparation degree program. See the College of Education - Office of Academic Advising information for students seeking initial certification and entering with a bachelor degree.

Educational Technology Endorsement (MDE Code: NP)

What is the Educational Technology Endorsement? What are the benefits of having the endorsement?

The Educational Technology endorsement is for already certified teachers.

The purpose of the endorsement is to encourage the development of Information Age learning practices and techniques throughout the learning communities of Michigan by recognizing the accomplishments of educators who gain expertise in such skills and by creating new avenues and incentives for the use of Information Age practices in professional development, as well as by creating a growing cadre of highly skilled professionals with such knowledge and skills.

Teachers holding this endorsement may have opportunities to mentor other teachers and provide leadership by example in the schools where they are employed. This endorsement is not intended to relieve the responsibilities of Michigan educators to be prepared to use Information Age tools and learning techniques and processes. To the contrary, the expectations set forth in the State Board's policy that all educators and administrators will be prepared to use Information Age tools and learning techniques and processes remains a strong expectation.

What classes can I teach with the Educational Technology Endorsement (NP code)?

The Michigan Department of Education has documented classes that can be taught by holders of various endorsements as impacted No Child Left Behind. Take a look at their document which was effective December 2004 to see what classes holders of the NP - Educational Technology Endorsement can teach.
