1. When will I be notified of admission to the program?

The first cohort of part-time students will be notified of admission by March, 2010. The first course, EDST 800 Seminar I- Introduction to Educational Studies: Scholarship, Teaching, and Learning will be taught in a concentrated hybrid format with face-to-face meetings at the beginning of August 2010.

2. Where will the program courses be offered?

All courses will be offered at the Eastern Michigan University campus in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

3. How will the courses be offered?

All courses will be offered in either a face-to-face format or a combination of face-to-face and on-line courses in a hybrid format.

4. What is the admission process?

ALL OF THE FOLLOWING MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE EMU ADMISSIONS OFFICE BY FEBRUARY 1, 2010.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral program in Educational Studies at Eastern Michigan University, successful completion of the following phases is required.

Application Phase:

DEADLINE: HAND DELIVERED OR POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN 5:00 pm EST, February 1, 2010.

1. Submit to the Office of Admission at 400 Pierce Hall, Ypsilanti, MI, 48197:
a. Completed Graduate Admission Application Form.
b. Application Fee.
c. Official or true-attested copy of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts documenting completion of either a Master’s or Specialist degree from an accredited university with at least a 3.3 GPA on a four point scale.
d. If applicable, submit evidence of English language proficiency as documented by official test scores on the TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS.
 
2. Submit to the Department of Teacher Education (313 Porter Building) in ONE ENVELOPE ALL of the following items:
a. A resume reflecting 1) professional experience, 2) community engagement, 3) scholarly activity, and 4) other evidence supportive of this application.
b. Three (3) professional references. Each reference must include both a letter and a completed reference form (see website for reference form) enclosed in a sealed envelope with the signature of the referrer across the seal.
c. A typed rationale statement (maximum of 350 words) explaining how the focus of the Doctorate in Educational Studies program supports your professional development goals.
  d. A critical/analytical essay expressly written for your application to the doctoral program that meets the following content guidelines and format (see rubric for scoring):
  i. Structure/content:
1. Meaningful and substantive definition of a relevant issue in either urban education or nursing education. Nursing practice issues must be discussed from the standpoint of nursing education.
2. Critical appraisal of the issue demonstrating your ability to explore multiple sides with supporting research or theoretical literature.
3. Discussion section demonstrating your understanding of how this issue relates to urban education or nursing education, advocacy and leadership within your concentration focus.
 
NOTE: Papers written for other purposes rarely meet these criteria. Therefore, papers written for courses are not acceptable.
 
  ii. Format:
1. APA style (6th ed.) for title page, headings, citations, and reference page.
2. Maximum of 750 words (excluding references).
3. Conventions of Standard English grammar and syntax.
  4. Clarified content through the logical organization of ideas. This is reinforced with an informative introduction, fully developed paragraphs, effective transitions, and a compelling conclusion.
 
Essays that do not meet these criteria will immediately disqualify the applicant from the application process. Thus, it is important for you to have a quality review of your original essay before submission.

Interview Phase:

Select applicants will meet with the doctoral admissions committee for a screening interview.

5. What are the admission criteria?
  • Urban Education
    • Master’s or Specialist Degree with a GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    • Writing sample.
  • Nursing Education
    • Masters in a Nursing Clinical Specialty with a GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    • Writing sample.
    • Complete of an Intermediate Statistics course with a grade of "B" or better and taken within the last five years.
    • Completion of Or the equivalent of the following EMU School of Nursing teaching certificate course work (NOTE: these three courses may be taken concurrently with doctoral courses after admission):
      • NURS 620
      • NURS 622
      • NURS 624
