1. What is the FETE class and who is required to take it?

Field Experience Teacher Education (FETE) is a structured sequence of 3 one credit courses, providing better opportunity for increased learning for students as they complete their required pre-student teaching hours. FETE includes 3 requirements for course completion: Field experience, written assignments, and participation in on-line (caucus) discussions. Students who are preparing to become teachers are required to take FETE if they started at a college/university after Fall of 1998, or if they are earning their teaching certificate as a Post-Bach. (Graduate) student.

2. My program does not require FETE. Can I take FETE classes if I want to?

If you are not required to take FETE, you may still take it. The benefits to taking it are that you will learn more because FETE’s overarching goal is to teach the skill of reflective teaching (an important skill for all teachers) and you will do this in part by close communication with other students completing their field experience. This results in the student being exposed to several school settings, rather than just the ones you are completing pre-student teaching in. The second major benefit is that you will have on your transcript credits for pre-student teaching, to which you can speak during an employment interview. Prior to FETE, this was not the case. Even though you still had to complete the pre-student teaching hours, there was nothing on your transcript to indicate this

3. Who does not have to take FETE at this time?
Currently, those who do not have to take FETE are students who:
  • Entered college prior to Fall of 1998.
  • Are Special Education majors.
  • Are Music majors.
  • Business Education and Tech. Majors do not have to take FETE 301/302; they have an alternative field experience.

4. There are no class times listed for FETE. How do I know where to go?

There are no class times listed because FETE is an on-line credit course. You may participate on-line at your convenience, as long as you do so within the required timelines. There is a general orientation held during the first week of classes, which is required. At this orientation, you will meet your FETE instructor and be given all the information you need to complete FETE. Dates and times are posted around Porter and on the FETE bulletin board (3rd Floor, down the hall from 313 Porter) at the beginning of each semester.

5. Is attendance at the FETE orientation required?

Yes, attendance at FETE orientation is required. Because the first class of co-requisites may conflict with the orientation meeting, there are make-up sessions scheduled. Dates and times are posted around Porter and on the FETE bulletin board (3rd Floor, down the hall from 313 Porter).

6. Where is the FETE office located?

7. How do I get a FETE pre-student teaching placement?

There are 2 ways that you may be placed in a FETE field experience: A) Self-placement: you place yourself in the age appropriate setting. The policy and directions regarding the self-placement process can be found in the carousel at 313 Porter as well as in the various FETE course packs. (See forms below)B) FETE office placement: You may request placement by the FETE office. How to do this is also available in the information in the carousel. There are timelines that must be followed if you are going to request us to place you. Placement at the school, location, or days that you request cannot be guaranteed. (See forms below).

8. Must I be formally admitted to the teacher preparation program to take FETE courses?

To take the first FETE course (FETE 201), in the 3-course sequence, you do not need to be admitted to the teacher preparation program. However, to take the next 2 courses (FETE 301/302 and FETE 401/402) you do need to be formally admitted to the teacher preparation.

9. Can I take FETE 201 and FETE 301/302 at the same time?

It is highly unusual to take FETE 201 and FETE 301/02 simultaneously, but is approved under specific circumstances. Any such request should be made to the FETE coordinator with the rationale as to why you are requesting to take both courses during the same term.

10. I still have specific questions about my FETE program. Who should I contact?

If you have any questions regarding FETE, please contact the FETE office at 734.487.7120 ext. 2502 or visit 313 Porter.
