Professor David Hortin was one of those individuals and we are honored to carry on his legacy with a scholarship. Leaving a lasting legacy through a scholarship is a wonderful and time-honored way to remember those who shaped our lives and our communities. Flashing police lights and screaming sirens jumpstart Barbara Martin-Bailey’s sketch pencil. As the forensic artist for the Oakland County (Mich.) Sheriff’s Office, Martin-Bailey is frequently called to the scene of a burglary or homicide to coax a description of the suspect from a traumatized witness. “When I’m interviewing a witness, I’m so intensely interested in what they’re saying that someone could drive a truck through the room and I wouldn’t even notice,” said Martin-Bailey, of Berkley, Mich. For 24 years, the college textbook “The Twentieth Century: A Brief Global History” has been a staple in universities from the United States to the Mediterranean island of Cypress. It also happens to be written by four Eastern Michigan University history professors. The rare, longtime collaborative team includes Walter Moss, a current professor of history and philosophy, and Richard Goff, Janice Terry and Jiu-Hwa Upshur, all now retired. Read more
