Alumni honor excellence in the classroom, lab
By Kevin Merrill

Six EMU professors will be honored Saturday, Sept. 22, by the EMU Alumni Association for excellence as educators. Winners of the annual Teaching Excellence Awards are nominated by either alumni or current students, and are chosen based upon their abilities as creative, inspiring and knowledgeable instructors.

The 2007 recipients are:

College of Arts and Sciences: Anthony (Troy) Adams (B.S. ’83), an associate professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology; Jessica (Decky) Alexander (M.F.A. ’96), an associate professor in the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts; and Heather Neff, a professor in the Department of English Language and Literature. Because of its size (18 departments), the college is usually represented by three recipients.

College of Education: Ronald Williamson (M.A. ’70, M.A. ’78, Ed.D. ’96), a professor in the Department of Leadership and Counseling.

College of Health and Human Services: Valerie Howells (B.S. ’74), an associate professor in the School of Health Sciences’ occupational therapy program.

College of Technology: Vijay Mannari, an assistant professor in the School of Engineering Technology and coordinator of its polymers and coatings program.
Recipients receive an award commemorating the event, a medallion and a certificate. This year’s ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. in the EMU Student Center Grand Ballroom. For more information about the event, contact the Office for Alumni Relations at alumni.relations@emich.edu or 734.487.0250.
