Cooperative Education Requirements

Eastern Michigan University's Cooperative Education program provides students with a unique opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to a temporary or part-time career-related employment position. Participating employers may include, but are not limited to, business, industry, social services, nonprofit agencies and the public sector. Career Services staff, in conjunction with EMU faculty and employers, develops work assignments that parallel the student's academic program. Co-op provides direct, on-the-job experience while enhancing a student's academic preparation. Students earn academic credit and a salary for each co-op job assignment.

Requirements for Co-op:

    Undergraduate Requirements:
  • Completion of 55 credit hours (junior status).
  • Completion of 12 to 15 hours of Computer Science courses. (Must have completed COSC 334 or be in COSC 334 at time of application).
  • EMU Grade point average of 3.0 preferred. EMU Computer Science GPA of 2.5 minimum.
  • Transfer students must have eight hours of their major completed at EMU.
    Graduate Requirements:
  • Grade point of 3.0 minimum and have attended at least one semester at EMU.
    How to apply for Co-op:
  • Visit the Career Services Center, 311 King Hall (734-487-0400), and pick up an information packet outlining the program and application process.
  • Get the needed signatures.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to visit the Career Services Center during their first semester on campus to begin planning their co-op experience.
