Summary:
The University of Michigan Library's Web Systems department is seeking a Drupal programmer and web designer with demonstrated experience and expertise in Drupal, PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, Adobe PhotoShop, and Adobe Illustrator. This is a permanent full-time position.
Library Web Systems recently (August 2009) launched a new Drupal-powered web site at http://www.lib.umich.edu This site involves extensive customizations to Drupal, use of the Solr search engine, and close integration with the VuFind interface to the library catalog.
Library Web Systems maintains numerous applications outside of Drupal, including a social bookmarking tool, an experimental federated search engine, and numerous other services and tools. More information about the department and our projects can be found on the Library Web Systems web site.
Responsibilities:

Develops, extends, and maintains Drupal and PHP code base for library web site (50%).

Designs and implements user interface features for library web sites in coordination with the Director of Communications (25%)

Participates, as needed, on library teams and committees related to web design (15%)

Other duties as assigned (10%)
Duties:
Reporting to the Web Systems Manager, the Drupal Developer/Web Designer is an integral part of a team developing innovative library services tailored to the University Library's diverse user base.
The Drupal Administrator/Web Designerworks independently and with other developers in Library Web Systems to:

Maintain the existing public Drupal web site

Design and develop a new Drupal-powered staff intranet
-
Develop new functionality for the library web sites
-
Maintain and extend the sites' graphic identity to other library web tools and services (in coordination with the Director of Communications)
Qualifications:
Required:
-
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field.
-
Experience with Drupal site administration and module development (or similar experience with other content management systems).

Demonstrated experience with PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, JQuery (or similar JavaScript libraries), CSS.

Familiarity and experience with Photoshop and Illustrator as web design tools.

Familiarity and experience with web standards and accessibility issues in web site design.

Ability and/or experience working comfortably and effectively as part of a development/implementation team in a culturally diverse work environment.

Good interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (orally and verbally).

Proven ability to manage timelines, meet deadlines, and produce project documentation. The individual will be required to work on and prioritize a project list as well as handle interruptions in a timely and effective manner.
Desired:

Master's Degree in Computer Science or Information/Library Science, or an MA in a related field such as graphic design

Experience conducting usability testing studies and analyzing results, including cross-platform and browser issues preferred.

Experience debugging and maintaining code.

Demonstrated understanding of and experience with user interface design skills.

Experience testing code for usability, security, accessibility and browser compatibility.
Classification, Salary, and Benefits:
Classification is anticipated at Web Designer Senior or possibly at rank of Assistant Librarian dependent on qualifications and experience.
