Company:        University of Michigan

UMCE/BlackOps is looking to fill summer temp positions. There is a possibility for positions to continue next Fall based on availability and performance. Hiring is not limited to UM students. Expected salary is $12/hour.

Advantages:

BlackOps is reponsible for a number of campus infrastructure services including email routing, IMAP email storage, UMOD, DNS and the Campus Computing Sites printing and radmind servers. Our temps will have the opportunity to build on their basic unix skills and gain an understanding of large scale unix system administration. Areas for skills growth include general troubleshooting, radmind deployment and management, automation via scripting, and hardware evaluation/testing/ deployment.

Summer projects include ongoing hardware evaluations, burn-in and migration, gentoo loadset development, virtualization, and migration of Sites printing/radmind servers.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in large scale, high- availability services.

Requirements:

  • Availability
Candidates should be available for a MINIMUM of 20 hours per week during business hours. Positions are available for up to 40 hours per week. Some work may be required outside business hours especially past 5pm on weekday evenings. If you are only available to work 20 hours afternoon availability will be required. There will be some opportunity for off-site work once staff are ramped up.

  • Driver's License/Transportation
You must be able to get to Arbor Lakes. A free bus is available if you don't have your own car: <http://pts.umich.edu/taking_the_bus/routes/umhs_intercampus.php> You must have a driver's license and be eligible to drive a University vehicle: <http://pts.umich.edu/um_vehicles_services/fleet.php#who>

  • Skills
Familiarity with unix is critical. Candidates should have knowledge of basic unix command line tools (e.g. ls, ps, df, vi, grep, awk) and understand typical file organization strategies (e.g. /etc vs. /var). Experience with bash or perl scripting and radmind is also desirable.

Hardware deployment will be involved so candidates must be able to lift and carry servers weighing up to 50 lbs.
