Short Bio:

Benedict D. Ilozor, Ph.D., M.Sc. & B.Sc. (Honors) Architecture, MNIA, FMA from ‘98, LEED Accredited Professional, AIA Assoc. (architectural qualifications accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) education standard and American Institute of Architects (#01-566 EESA-NCARB Evaluation), the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) for the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA), and Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) for the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) – MNIA, 1001th Member, 967th Licensed Architect – Practice Seal Serial Number 967 issued in 1991). In the spring of 2006, Dr. Ilozor joined Construction Management Programs in the School of Engineering Technology at Eastern Michigan University, where he is a tenured full professor contributing architecture, construction management, renewable energy and sustainability, as well as facilities planning, design, and management expertise. Before Eastern Michigan University, he was professor at the Department of Architecture, Hampton University. At Deakin University in Australia where he was first tenured as faculty, he discharged several academic leadership responsibilities in roles as Management Discipline Coordinator for Architecture and Construction Management, Sixth Year Level Coordinator for Architecture and Construction Management double degree, and headed up Facilities Management for the Built Environment Research Group at the School of Architecture and Building. He was then also Australian Coordinator for Master of Real Estate distance learning program – a collaboration between Deakin University, and the University of Greenwich, UK. Before Deakin University, he held faculty and research roles at the University of New South Wales, and the University of Technology, Sydney.

At Eastern Michigan University, Dr. Ilozor’s teaching roles encompass Construction Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, & Equipment Systems, Construction Graphics/Drawings (including AutoCAD and Revit Architecture BIM), Introduction to Construction, Construction Systems, Leadership in Energy and Sustainable Built Environment, Electrical, Mechanical Equipment Systems, in addition to acting as Research and Graduate Assistants Coordinator, as well as Chair for Ph.D. dissertations. He is a multiple award winning teacher, researcher and practitioner, with extensive multidisciplinary background in sustainable architecture, construction management, energy systems, and built facility design & management spanning through over two decades. He has been involved in sustainable architecture, construction project management, embodied energy of systems, and facility planning & management teaching and research, and in the design and delivery of substantial built projects, ranging from residential to industrial, recreational, institutional, and commercial buildings. He is a consultant to architectural and engineering firms such as Ebenezer Associates, a Baltimore based design-build firm.

With over 100 publications (refereed journal papers, articles, monographs, etc.), he has received various honors and awards of excellence, and best paper prizes on innovation and sustainability in the US, Australia, and the UK, including the Facility Management Association (FMA) of Australia Excellence Awards in 1998, 1999 & 2000. A paper from his collaborative work on healthcare built facilities, which he co-authored with colleagues from the University of Derby, Oxford University, and University of Portsmouth, UK, was awarded Faculty Prize for Best Paper on Sustainability, and a Commended Best Paper on Innovation, at the CIB conference in Glasgow, UK.

Dr. Ilozor is Editor (Asia Pacific) for Journal of Management Development, and he is on the Editorial Board of many high impact journals such as the American Society of Civil Engineers Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, Journal of Construction, the Journal of Engineering, Design and Technology, and the International Journal of Construction Project Management. He is a regular reviewer for leading international journals, and major international research funding bodies such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), UK. Dr. Ilozor has supervised several successful doctoral and master degree candidates. Apart from winning several competitive grants, Dr. Ilozor’s research has since been recognized through FMA as unique for engaging veracious methodology to make tangible contributions towards providing a better understanding of real-world but little investigated and understood needs of the built environment.
